This is one of those songs that you write when you don't have a way to share your feelings any other way - I hope it makes you guys feel better the same way it did me after I broke up with my first serious boyfriend.
Chords:
In the original YouTube version, the chords are: (first verse): G, C, G, C, Am, Em, D, G. All of the other verses are G, C, G, Am, Em, D, G. The bridge is G, D, Am, C. The chorus is C, Am, Em, D, then C, Am, Em, D, G. (Very simple, really!) I have a capo on the 2nd fret. The bridge does G, D, Am, C, Em, D on the second time 'round.
The version here is slightly different because it was recorded nearly 6 months later with a different guitar (and player.)
The awesome album art is by Matt Nguyen!
lyrics
I'm planning on selling my heart
I'm giving up every part
It's no longer open, it's no longer vacant
I'm planning on selling my heart
The pieces I'll put in a jar
I'll burn them and scatter them far
And wherever they land, there they'll grind into sand
The pieces they'll put in a jar
For the rest, I'll just put it on sale
Take a sign and some paint and a nail
One heart, slightly battered, but well worth the tale
For the rest, I'll just put it on sale
I'm not surprised that it gave up the ghost
Like a soldier abandoning a long-held post
I'm not shocked that it quit, I just wanted to say:
It was good, it was strong, in its day.
In the hole I'll plant roses in June
Hang a sign on the edge of the moon
Saying, "Sorry I loved you - it ended so soon."
In the hole I'll plant roses in June
It's fine to abandon my heart
I never needed it anyway
And I can't get you out of my heart
And I never needed it anway
I'm not surprised that it gave up the ghost
Like a soldier abandoning a long-held post
I'm not shocked that it quit, I just wanted to say:
It was good, it was strong, in its day.
If you're in the market for hearts
Or in need of a second-hand part
I've no use for mine, I can get along fine
I'm planning on selling my heart
